Free samples from Voltage-Controlled

Hope everyone out there had a good Christmas and got all the music gear that you've been hoping for. I've put together an extra present for you, I've gone through my hard drive and collected all the samples that Haven't yet made it onto the site. There's lots of synth sounds in this one.

I've added tempo and key information to some of the files (where appropriate) so you should be able to easily fit them into your projects.

As always the samples are available free of charge but a quick donation to the site (see PayPal donate box in the right sidebar) wouldn't hurt. All sounds are royalty free so you don't have to worry about copyright.

Samples Back Online

In the last post I mentioned that some of the links to the free samples that are on offer here at Voltage-Controlled weren't working. I've now re-uploaded them to a different file hosting site (FileFactory) and they should be available to download again.

Sample Downloading Issues

Just a quick update. I've noticed that some of the links samples on the site no longer work. They're currently hosted on Minus.com, this might be a bit of a glitch on their end but to be honest I don't really know.

I'm currently in the process of re-uploading the samples to FileFactory.com and will change the links in the effected posts. I'll put a post up here when all of the links have been updated but in the mean time, sit tight, they'll be available again soon.

Free samples: Animoog Soundscapes and FX

The Moog Animoog for iPad has got to be my favourite iPad synthesiser of all time. I especially love it for some of the weird and "out-there" sounds that it can produce. That's where the inspiration for this sound set set comes in, there's 95 sounds in this pack ready to be loaded into your sampler or DAW. The sounds are completely royalty free so you can use them in any project you like, free of charge.

Updates and news April 2012

Just a quick update to let you guys know that I'm working on a Refill for all you Reason users out there. The Refill will contain lots of multi-sampled instruments for the NN-XT sampler and maybe a few custom Subtractor and Combinator patches. This is a work in progress so I don't know when it's going to actually hit the site but I'm aiming for 2GB worth of samples for you guys to enjoy. So far I've taken samples from the MicroKorg, the Korg R3 and the Korg AG-10 sound module. I'm still waiting on the delivery of my new camera connection kit for the iPad (my old one broke) and then I can sample some iPad synths as well.

Free Kong drum kit samples

For this free sample pack I've been messing around with the analog modules from Reason's Kong drum machine. As I said in my last post, I use Kong for all of my drums when producing music.

This free sample pack contains:

• 4 one shot kicks samples
• 4 one shot snares samples
• 4 one shot hi-hats samples
• 4 one shot percussion samples
• 6 bonus loops

All the samples were made using the Kong drum machine and further processed with various VSTs in Ableton live.

All the samples that are available here on Voltage-Controlled are available completely free of charge. They are also royalty free, which means that you can use them in any creative protect (commercial or non-commercial) without having to clear them.

Creating a beat with Korg iElectribe + free iElectribe samples

The Korg iElectribe is a beast of a drum machine. It was the first app that I brought for my iPad but for some reason I've never really got around to uploading anything about it on Voltage-Controlled.

Anyway, here's a short video of me constructing a simple drum beat using the iElectribe, I love the sound of this app.

I've also uploaded some iElectribe samples for you lot. It's only a small pack, it contains 8 one shot drum hits from the custom drum kit I used in the video.

FutureMusic sampling special 'making of' videos

FutureMusic magazine have uploaded two 'Making Of' videos to go along with their Sampling special edition. Part one is hosted by Cyclick and part two by Groove Criminals (Both regularly supply the free samples that can be found on the free CD that comes along with FutureMusic Magazine).

Part one focuses more in foundsound (eg, recording every day objects) where as part two talks about creative ways of getting cool sounds out of your synthesizers and drum machines. To be honest I preferred part two as I'm a huge synth nerd.

They're about 20 mins long each but you might find something interesting/useful. Watch part two if you just want to look at lots of cool synths.

Broken sample links are now working again.

I mentioned in the last post that some of the sample packs on Voltage-Controlled were hosted on the file sharing site MegaUpload. As MegaUpload was recently shut down the samples were made unavailable for you guys to download.

I've just finished re-uploading the lost sample packs to minus.com and they are once again available for you to download free of charge. The sample packs that I've had to re-upload are:

• Voltage controlled sample collection vol.1
• Free FoundSound percussion loops and one shots
• Punished 909 kit (MC-303)

Luckily I haven't been using MegaUpload for long so only three of the packs were lost but it's still a bit of a hassle have to re-upload them.

Just to make it clear, all of the samples available from Voltage-Controlled are copyright free. I created them so that musicians, sound designers, film makers, etc. can use them in their productions and creations for free of charge.

Samples unavailable at the moment

Right then, since megaupload has been shut down some of the samples on my site have been made unavailable. Until I can find a suitable replacement site to host my samples they will be temporarily unavailable to download. I'll try and fix this as soon as possible and apoligise for any inconvenience that this has caused.

I know megaupload has been used by some to upload pirated material but some of us actually use it to host our own material. If anyone can suggest another free file hosting site that I can use to host my samples and loops please post a comment below or email me at DanWeatherall@voltage-controlled.com

Punished 909 kit (MC-303) - Free samples

OK, so they're not actual 909 samples. The samples here are taken from the 909 kit on my MC-303 groovebox (Which are recorded from an original 909).

The MC303 has a really nice gritty sound to it (especially when you turn up the low boost), to add to that gritty flavour I ran the sounds through some plugins (Drive, EQ and Compressor).

There are 17 one-shot samples in this kit in .wav format. As always the Voltage-Controlled samples are completely royalty free so you can use them in any project you want without having to clear them.

Voltage-Controlled MicroKorg Ableton rack by LynchAudio

I've been meaning to post this on here for a good while now. Matt from LynchAudio has made an awesome Ableton Live rack using the MicroKorg samples from the Voltage-Controlled sample collection Vol.1 sample library.

There's ten loops in this sample pack, the loops are made with recordings of things that I found around my desk.

Voltage controlled sample collection vol.1

If you didn't know, Voltage-Controlled offers a selection of royalty free samples and loops. Every now and then I'll upload a new sample pack to the site, the samples are completely free to download and you can use them in your own productions or music without having to worry about copyright or anything like that.

A few weeks ago my external hard drive decided that it was going to die on me, this resulted in me losing backups of older sample packs and music. So to make sure that this wouldn't happen again I've gone through the site and re-downloaded the samples.

While I was re-building my backup folder I thought it would be a cool idea to upload the whole thing to the site and give you lot the option to download all of the Voltage Controlled samples at once. So that's exactly what I did, I compressed the samples down into two .RAR files and uploaded them.

Free soft synth waveforms/ put NI Massive in your Reason rack

I love making music using Propellerheads Reason but the lack of VST support can sometimes get annoying. There are tonnes of top quality soft synths out there that sound amazing but if you're only using reason then your missing out on some awesome sounds. I often find myself making a few loops in Ableton (intro) and then dropping then into an NNXT sampler in Reason so I can build a track around them.

This technique works well if you already know what sort of track you're going to be making. But if you're like me then you'll find that the best work you've done often comes from pure experimentation. In this case you want full control over your sounds so that you're track can evolve and grow over time.

It would be great to drop an instance of NI Massive into your Reason rack but as of yet VST support is not available in Reason.

Another popular option is to import raw waveforms into reason and build your own instrument from that. Fair enough you're not going to be able to replicate your favourite soft synth exactly but it will open up doors to completely new sounds and ideas.

Below I have uploaded a set of waveforms from 3 of my favourite soft synths; Massive, Firebird and Razor. There are ten waveforms from each synth so that's 30 samples in all. All the samples are pretty long so they should stretch out in your sampler giving you quite a decent range of playability.

Load them into your sampler and mess around with them add some effects and maybe a filter. You never know, you might come up with some pretty decent patches.

This sample pack contains synth hits taken from two of my favourite iPad synthesizers; the Animoog and Sunrizer.

Happy 100th

I started writing this blog back in august 2009, the main point of it was to promote my own music and write a little about what I was interested in (synthesizers and stuff). It wasn't something that I updated all the time and I have to admit that I forgot about it a few times.

About a month after I started the blog I recorded and uploaded a set of samples. The samples were really just some drum loops and bass lines that I recorded for a track I was working on (it never actually got finished). I thought it would be cool to upload them to the blog and allow people to download them to use them in their own productions. After a while I noticed that that one post with the samples had quite a lot of traffic, so I did a little snooping around the Internet and I found that I was being linked to from various websites and forums.

Soon, uploading samples here became a regular thing for me and the blog got more and more hits. Along side the samples, I also put up a few reviews and writings of my own and kept the blog running at a steady rate; posting updates, samples and reviews every time I got my hands on a new piece of music gear or software.

That seemed like ages ago but I still can't believe this will be the 100th post from me. Fair enough 100 doesn't really seem like a whole lot but when I think about all the time that I've put into writing the reviews and recording the samples I still find it hard to believe.

As I posted before, I'm in the middle of a re-imagining of this blog. The name will be changed eventually to something that relates more to the content of the blog (not just my name and a few numbers). There will also be some changes to the blog itself, I want to make it easier for new visitors to find their way around the blog and access older content without hassle.

To celebrate this milestone I've put together a new sample pack. The pack will contain synth hits taken from two of my favourite iPad synthesizers, the Animoog and Sunrizer.

Analog acid/minimal bass stabs (multisample)

These multi samples were taken from my FreeBass FB383 bassline synth. It’s a rackmount analog bass synthesizer (clone of the Roland TB303).

The samples were recorded directly into Ableton live, I then added some EQ and compression to give the samples a bit more bite.

As always the samples are completely royalty free and available to download at no charge.

There are 13 individual bass hits in .wav format (notes C1-C2) ideal for loading up in any software or hardware sampler.

Lately Bass and drum beats.

The Lately bass sound is a preset found on Yamahas line of FM synths, the sound has been used on many recordings over the years.

In this sample pack you will find:

-6 bass loops using the Lately bass sound.

-the same 6 loops but with a little grit and distortion added

-A Lately bass Mutisample pack

-8 Drum loops
